In today’s increasingly conscious marketplace, knowing the origin and journey of our food is no longer a niche interest – it’s a fundamental expectation. For high-value crops like avocados, ensuring verifiable traceability isn’t just about consumer trust; it’s crucial for market access, quality assurance, and unlocking the full potential of sustainable agriculture. At ONE MILLION AVØCADOS (ØMA), our mission to increase avocado production and quality via blockchain is deeply intertwined with solving this traceability challenge.

That’s why we’re thrilled to highlight our ongoing partnership development with GS1 Kenya. As the custodians of global standards for identification and data sharing, GS1 provides the essential “language” for transparent supply chains worldwide. Our recent collaborative fieldwork in the Eburru farming community wasn’t just about mapping orchards; it was about deepening this partnership to build a seamless bridge between advanced agricultural technology and globally recognized traceability standards.

The Challenge: Bridging Digital Farms and Global Markets

While ØMA excels at capturing granular, real-time data from the orchard – leveraging precision farming, IoT sensors, and blockchain for immutable record-keeping – connecting this rich farm-level data to broader supply chain systems requires adherence to global standards. Consumers, retailers, and international markets increasingly rely on identifiers like the Global Location Number (GLN) to pinpoint origin with confidence. The challenge lies in integrating these systems efficiently without overburdening the farmers we aim to empower.

The Solution: ØMA & GS1 Kenya – A Synergistic Approach

Our work with GS1 Kenya is focused on creating this vital link. Together, ØMA and GS1 Kenya are pioneering solutions to traceability issues that have long plagued the agricultural sector. By combining ØMA’s powerful on-farm data capture capabilities (including precise GIS mapping) with GS1’s established framework for location identification (GLNs), we are building a system that offers unprecedented benefits:

  • Enhanced Market Access: Products originating from ØMA partner farms can carry globally recognized identifiers, simplifying export processes and meeting the stringent traceability demands of premium international retailers and consumers. GS1 Kenya’s expertise is instrumental in ensuring our digital footprint translates effectively into market advantage.
  • Verifiable Sustainability Claims: Linking specific orchard data (captured by ØMA) to a unique GLN (facilitated through GS1 standards) allows for verifiable proof of origin and sustainable practices, combating greenwashing and building authentic brand trust.
  • Empowered Farmers: By integrating these systems efficiently, we aim to provide farmers access to global markets and the data they need to improve their practices, all through the user-friendly ØMA platform. Our goal is to leverage GS1 standards to open doors for our farmers, not create administrative hurdles.
  • Streamlined Integration: Our collaborative sessions confirmed the potential to integrate key aspects of the GLN assignment process directly within the ØMA platform, leveraging the data we already collect. This creates a more efficient pathway for farmers to adopt global standards.

Beyond Technology: Building a Foundation of Trust

This partnership isn’t merely technical integration; it’s about building an ecosystem founded on trust and shared value. Our recent fieldwork, where we successfully mapped several new partner farms in Eburru, reinforced the importance of this collaborative spirit. Engaging directly with farmers, understanding their operational realities, and ensuring they have the resources for healthy, productive orchards remains paramount to our mission and purpose of Growing Africa, one Avocado at a time.

The Future is Traceable

ONE MILLION AVØCADOS (ØMA) continues towards our vision of planting and sustainably managing over one million avocado trees, partnerships like the one with GS1 Kenya are crucial. They enable us to not only leverage cutting-edge technology like blockchain but also to connect our farmers and their high-quality produce to the global marketplace with unparalleled integrity and transparency. Together, we are setting a new standard for what traceable, sustainable, and impactful agriculture can achieve.
